You don’t paint a wall with a hammer. With AI, as with everything, you find the right tool for the job.
My last post showed why ChatGPT and Gemini were the “hammer” for factual analysis. For this project, the “paintbrush” was NotebookLM.
Which was no surprise. There’s a huge difference in how these AIs work.
🌐 “Ungrounded” AIs (like ChatGPT) pull answers from the whole internet, even if you upload documents for analysis.
🗄️ “Grounded” AIs (like NotebookLM) pull only from the documents you provide.
Once I grounded it in 1,000+ pages of dense legal text, NotebookLM became the exceptional study partner I was trying to build for my client:
✅ It refused to answer when it wasn’t sure of accuracy (as instructed).
✅ It provided clear, accurate answers with citations.
✅ It caught important nuances and overlaps between sources.
✅ And it never hallucinated.
And perhaps most importantly: it helped the client pass the licensing exam!
The takeaway: picking the right TYPE of technology for your task is critical. Use “ungrounded” tools like ChatGPT for brainstorming and creative work. Use a “grounded” AI like NotebookLM for high-accuracy, factual analysis.
Because choosing the right tool is a key to using technology as a human amplifier.
